Death Penalty Focus, Conservatives Concerned About the Death Penalty & The Innocence Project & Bruce Lisker

According to the National Registry of Exonerations, the number of people who have been wrongfully convicted in the United States since 1989 is staggering. As one of the 3,439 individuals who have been exonerated, I understand the profound impact that these wrongful convictions have on the lives of innocent people. Collectively, these cases represent a loss of more than 31,000 years of rightful freedom.Graphic: Number of Wrongful Convictions

Wrongful convictions occur when individuals are found guilty of crimes they did not commit. These cases highlight the flaws and shortcomings within the criminal justice system, and the devastating consequences that can result from these errors. While the reasons for wrongful convictions vary, common factors include eyewitness misidentification, false confessions, inadequate legal representation, and the use of unreliable forensic evidence.

One of the most troubling aspects of wrongful convictions is the fact that innocent individuals can spend years, or even decades, behind bars for crimes they did not commit. These individuals are stripped of their freedom, separated from their loved ones, and forced to endure the harsh realities of prison life. The emotional and psychological toll of wrongful convictions is immeasurable, leaving lasting scars on the lives of those who have been wrongfully convicted.

The impact of wrongful convictions extends far beyond the individuals directly affected. Families are torn apart, communities are left questioning the integrity of the criminal justice system, and the public’s trust in the system is eroded. The consequences of a wrongful conviction can be far-reaching and long-lasting, affecting not only the innocent individual, but also those connected to them.

Efforts to address the issue of wrongful convictions have gained momentum in recent years. Organizations such as the Innocence Project and the National Registry of Exonerations work tirelessly to investigate wrongful convictions, advocate for the innocent, and push for criminal justice reforms. These organizations, along with advancements in DNA testing and forensic science, have played a crucial role in uncovering the truth and securing the release of those who have been wrongfully convicted.

While progress has been made, there is still much work to be done. The fight against wrongful convictions requires ongoing commitment and dedication from all stakeholders involved in the criminal justice system. This includes law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, defense attorneys, judges, and legislators. It is crucial that we continue to examine the causes of wrongful convictions and implement reforms to prevent future injustices.

Additionally, public awareness and education are essential in addressing the issue of wrongful convictions. By understanding the factors that contribute to these miscarriages of justice, individuals can become advocates for change and demand accountability from the criminal justice system. Through increased transparency, improved investigative techniques, and enhanced legal protections, we can strive towards a more just and fair society.

As someone who has experienced the devastating impact of a wrongful conviction, I am committed to raising awareness about this issue and fighting for justice. Together, we can work towards a system that values truth, fairness, and the preservation of innocent lives.

Again, according to the National Registry of Exonerations, Bruce Lisker is one of a staggering 3,439 people who have been exonerated in the United States since 1989.

Combined, these wrongful convictions represent a loss of more than 31,000 years of rightful freedom.

He says that he does “consider these years stolen, not merely lost.”

When he was just 17, Los Angeles police arrested him for the murder of his mother, a crime that he didn’t commit. By 19, he was sentenced to life in prison after a trial that included false evidence, ineffective assistance of defense counsel, and a jailhouse snitch who, in exchange for a lesser sentence, provided false testimony that I had confessed to him.

“My life was stolen from me for more than 26 years. But the lives of innocent people sentenced to death aren’t just stolen, they’re taken – forever.”

In 2009, after two trials and endless years of appeals, his conviction was overturned.

More than twenty-six years of his life had been stolen from.

Wrongful convictions happen. They’re built into the criminal justice system because errors can and will occur wherever human beings are involved. Nine times out of ten, errors made will prejudice the defense and benefit the prosecution and are all too often ignored.

This is just one of many reasons to be a part Bruce’s journey and the Death Penalty Focus (DFP).

“My life was stolen from me for more than 26 years. But the lives of innocent people sentenced to death aren’t just stolen; they’re taken – forever.”

For 35 years, DPF has been shining a light on just how broken the death penalty system is, the very real risk of executing the innocent, and the indisputable fact that it is a racist, classist, arbitrary, unjust, and barbaric punishment.Like him, DPF believes capital punishment is an affront to all that is decent and humane. Please help the end of this brutal punishment in favor of a more just, humane, and equitable justice system.

Urgent Action Needed: Endangered Monkeys in Need of Sanctuary Homes

One of the most effective ways to protect endangered monkeys is by providing them with sanctuary homes. These sanctuaries serve as safe havens where monkeys can live in a natural environment, free from human interference and the dangers of the wild. They not only offer protection but also provide a chance for these endangered species to recover and thrive.

The Importance of Sanctuary Homes. Sanctuary homes play a crucial role in the conservation of endangered monkeys. Here are some reasons why they are essential:

1. Habitat Restoration

Many monkey species are losing their natural habitats due to deforestation, urbanization, and agricultural expansion. Sanctuary homes provide a space where these habitats can be restored, allowing monkeys to live in an environment that closely resembles their natural surroundings. This helps to maintain biodiversity and ensures the survival of these species for future generations.

2. Protection from Poaching

Illegal hunting and the pet trade are major threats to the survival of endangered monkeys. Sanctuary homes offer a safe refuge where monkeys are protected from poachers and wildlife traffickers. By providing a secure environment, these sanctuaries help to reduce the demand for monkey products and discourage illegal activities.

3. Rehabilitation and Release

Some sanctuary homes also serve as rehabilitation centers, where injured or orphaned monkeys are nursed back to health and prepared for release into the wild. These centers provide medical care, behavioral training, and socialization, ensuring that monkeys have the skills and resilience to survive in their natural habitats. Rehabilitation and release programs are vital for the conservation of endangered monkey populations.

Examples of Successful Sanctuary Homes

There are several notable examples of sanctuary homes that have made a significant impact on the conservation of endangered monkeys:

1. The Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary (Sierra Leone)

The Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary in Sierra Leone is dedicated to the protection and rehabilitation of chimpanzees. It provides a safe haven for orphaned and illegally captured chimpanzees, allowing them to live in a natural forest environment. The sanctuary also focuses on community outreach and education to raise awareness about the importance of conservation.

2. The Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary (South Africa)

The Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary in South Africa is home to various monkey species, including lemurs, capuchins, and vervet monkeys. The sanctuary aims to rehabilitate and release these monkeys back into the wild whenever possible. It also offers educational tours and programs to promote awareness and understanding of primate conservation.

3. The Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre (Malaysia)

The Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in Malaysia is renowned for its efforts in rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned and injured orangutans. The center provides a safe and natural environment for these primates to learn essential survival skills before being released into protected forest reserves. It also conducts research and conservation initiatives to protect orangutan populations in the wild.

How You Can Help. Supporting sanctuary homes is crucial for the conservation of endangered monkeys. Here are some ways you can contribute:

1. Donate

Many sanctuary homes rely on donations to cover their operating costs, including food, medical care, and habitat maintenance. Consider making a financial contribution to support their efforts in protecting endangered monkeys.

2. Volunteer

If you have the time and skills, consider volunteering at a sanctuary home. Many organizations welcome volunteers to assist with various tasks, such as animal care, habitat maintenance, and educational programs.

3. Spread Awareness

Use your voice to raise awareness about the importance of sanctuary homes and the conservation of endangered monkeys. Share information on social media, participate in educational events, and support campaigns that aim to protect these incredible creatures.

By supporting sanctuary homes and actively participating in conservation efforts, we can make a significant difference in the lives of endangered monkeys. Together, we can ensure that these fascinating creatures continue to thrive in their natural habitats for generations to come.

Tell Feds That Trafficked Monkeys Must Be Sent to Sanctuary Homes. More than 1,000 endangered monkeys have been languishing in steel-cage limbo for over a year because of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s (FWS) foot-dragging cowardice. We need to let the agency know that these monkeys—likely ripped from their forest homes—have not been forgotten and must be sent to sanctuary homes.

In early 2023, PETA learned that the agency had prohibited 1,269 monkeys, who had been brought into the U.S. by notorious monkey dealer Charles River Laboratories, from being experimented on because the company allegedly illegally imported them from Cambodia.

Around the same time, we learned that according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and a company shareholder briefing, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and the FWS launched an investigation into Charles River for possible violations of monkey-importation laws. We’re demanding that any monkey victims of illegal activities, including these 1,269 animals, be released to sanctuaries at the company’s expense. PETA and Born Free USA, which runs one of the largest monkey sanctuaries in the U.S., are ready to facilitate this. And if Charles River is found to have illegally imported monkeys, we’re demanding that its import license be revoked. This follows DOJ indictments of Cambodian officials and nationals for allegedly selling monkeys abducted from their forest home as bred in captivity.

Charles River’s 2023 shareholder report contained glaring omissions. Among other things, it neglected to divulge its link to the monkey supplier whose employees were indicted for alleged monkey smuggling and laundering. We’ve sent a letter to the company’s CEO, James C. Foster, calling on him to come clean about this.

“Charles River’s shareholders have a right to know that their company is linked to businesses allegedly mixed up in illegally importing wild monkeys. PETA is calling on Charles River to divulge its full role in driving the extinction of macaques worldwide by importing and experimenting on monkeys instead of embracing superior animal-free research.” —Dr. Lisa Jones-Engel, PETA primate scientist

Importation of monkeys by Charles River and other U.S. laboratory suppliers are pushing these monkeys to the brink of extinction. Recent reports out of Southeast Asia indicate that there will soon be no wild monkeys left in Cambodia, Laos, or Vietnam.

Charles River has a long history of violating laws and regulations. It has failed to conduct proper veterinary inspections before trucking monkeys across the country and even baked monkeys alive. It must now be held accountable.

Since these monkeys can’t go back home to their families in nature, the FWS must now do the next best thing by sending them to reputable sanctuaries and ensuring that Charles River is never allowed to import monkeys again.

Now more than ever, it’s critical that you take action. We must keep the pressure on the FWS to send the monkeys to sanctuaries and revoke Charles River’s monkey-import permit if it violated the law!

The 2024 election will be the most expensive in history

Furthermore, the cost of hiring campaign staff, organizing rallies and events, conducting polling and research, and maintaining a robust ground game all contribute to the overall expenditure. The 2024 election is expected to witness an unprecedented level of spending on these campaign essentials.

What sets the 2024 election apart is not just the sheer amount of money being spent, but also the fact that it surpasses the combined election budgets of all other countries in the world. This staggering statistic highlights the unique nature of American politics and the immense financial resources available to partisan groups.

While some may argue that the vast sums of money being injected into the election process allow candidates to effectively communicate their message and engage with voters, others are concerned about the potential consequences. Critics argue that such exorbitant spending can undermine the democratic process by giving undue influence to wealthy individuals and special interest groups.

As the cost of elections continues to rise, there is a growing concern that the influence of money in politics is eroding the principles of democracy. The ability to finance a campaign at such an unprecedented scale can create an uneven playing field, where candidates with access to substantial financial resources have a distinct advantage over those who do not.

Moreover, the focus on fundraising and donor cultivation can divert candidates’ attention away from the issues that truly matter to voters. This shift in priorities may lead to a disconnect between elected officials and the constituents they are meant to represent.

Recognizing the potential dangers of excessive election spending, many proponents of campaign finance reform have called for stricter regulations and transparency measures. Efforts to limit the influence of money in politics have included proposals such as public financing of campaigns, stricter disclosure requirements, and limits on individual and corporate contributions.

However, achieving meaningful reform in this area remains a complex and contentious task. Balancing the need for free and fair elections with the desire to curb the influence of money poses a significant challenge.

The 2024 election is on track to become the most expensive election in history, with partisan groups projected to spend over $20 billion dollars. This astronomical figure not only surpasses previous records in the United States but also exceeds the combined election budgets of the rest of the world. While the ability to finance campaigns at such a scale may have its benefits, it also raises concerns about the influence of money in politics and its potential impact on democracy. As we move forward, it is crucial to find a balance that ensures fair elections while safeguarding the principles of democracy.

Vote America
The 2024 election will be the most expensive in history. Partisan groups are expected to spend over $20 billion dollars on the election. This isn’t just more than the US has ever spent, it’s more than the entire rest of the world combined spends on elections.

The US spent nearly $6.5 billion on the 2016 election. The 2020 election doubled at over $14 billion. We’re on track to double the amount of cash we spent on the 2020 election — and for what? Best case scenario, your preferred octogenarian wins the election, and we’ll have a few weeks of quiet before campaigning starts for the 2026 midterm elections. This is a broken system.

There are a few reasons why US elections are so expensive, but the primary reason is that the vast majority of partisan dollars are spent on broadcast TV ads. And spending on broadcast TV ads has increased even as the number of people who actually see broadcast TV ads declines. Joe Biden spent $300 million more on TV ads in 2020 than Hillary Clinton did in 2016, even as viewership rates plummeted. And at least a third of those TV spots are fundraising ads: candidates run ads asking you to donate money so that they can run more fundraising ads. It’s a bizarre cycle.

At the same time, there’s almost no evidence that TV ads work to increase turnout. The primary reason that campaigns run so many TV ads is that political media buyers are paid a percentage of the money they spend. They are incentivized to choose the most expensive media, as opposed to the most effective, so they choose TV ads every time.

When partisan organizations ask you for money to spend on voter mobilization and GOTV efforts, they’re relying on outdated tactics with minimal impact. VoteAmerica takes a different approach to spending money. We adopt and abandon tactics based on how well they work to increase voter turnout. And in 2024, we’re going to focus our attention on one tactic that has been shown to increase turnout anywhere from 10-15 percentage points. We’re talking specifically about voting by mail (sometimes called “vote from home”).

We recently wrapped up a study that examined the impact on voting by mail in states that offered no-excuse absentee voting and permanent absentee voting (PAV). In the first category of states, anyone can vote by mail but you need to request a ballot for each election. In the permanent absentee voting states, you sign up once and receive a ballot in the mail automatically for all future elections. We then looked at the difference in turnout rates within PAV states between registered voters who signed up for PAV and those who had to vote in person. The difference in turnout was shocking.

These graphs show turnout rates in Arizona between permanent absentee voters and other registered voters. In 2020 and 2022, there is over a 30-point difference in turnout rates, with the largest boost being seen with the youngest voters.

Why does vote by mail increase turnout? Because this method of voting cuts through the red tape and brings the ballot box directly to the voter. And the impact is phenomenal.

To be direct: I’ve been doing this work for almost 20 years, and I have never seen anything that reliably increases turnout by over 30 points. This is unheard of.

In 2024 VoteAmerica will focus on recruiting registered citizens to vote by mail. This is the sort of promising yet overlooked work that VoteAmerica is known for. I’ve been saying for nearly 20 years now that the United States doesn’t have a voter registration problem, we have a voter turnout problem. 80% of Americans are already registered to vote. If we can get registered voters to cast ballots, we can increase turnout by 17 points. And helping people vote by mail is one of the most effective ways to boost turnout among registered voters.

There are 28 states that offer no-excuse absentee voting, and 13 that offer permanent absentee voting (Arizona, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, Florida, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Virginia). We’re going to start with the PAV states, because that’s where we will have the greatest impact for the least amount of dollars.

This is how we strengthen our democracy — with smart, data-driven solutions that deliver substantial returns on monetary investment. And this is where you come in. Instead of giving your hard-earned money to candidates and partisan groups who will light that money on fire, consider giving to VoteAmerica instead. Not only are donations tax-deductible, but every single dollar VoteAmerica spends goes toward smart, effective work.

With your help, we can deliver these proven tactics to as many states as possible.

If you’re interested in sponsoring an entire county or even an entire state, please contact us directly at finance@voteamerica.com.

Will you join over 40,000 voices in urging the California state government to put an end to the existence of kill shelters?

Stop Kill Shelters in California

We believe that the budget currently allocated to these kill shelters could be put to better use to save lives. Rather than spending money on euthanizing animals, we urge the government to redirect these funds towards spay and neuter programs, adoption efforts, and low-cost veterinary care.

We also encourage the state government to prioritize funding for animal welfare organizations that are committed to saving and rehoming animals, rather than simply euthanizing them. These organizations have a proven track record of success in reducing euthanasia rates, and we believe that they deserve our support.

The reality is that kill shelters are not the answer to the pet overpopulation problem. Instead, we need to focus on prevention through spaying and neutering, education on responsible pet ownership, and increasing adoption efforts. By investing in these programs, we can ensure that every animal has a chance to live a happy and healthy life.

We believe that ending kill shelters in California is not only the right thing to do, but it is also a financially responsible decision. By redirecting the budget currently allocated to these shelters towards life-saving programs, we can make a real difference in the lives of animals across our state.

Elephants Beaten and Chained for Shrine CircusesImage from Shrine Circus protest.

PETA supporters protested outside five Sharon Shrine Circus performances across East Texas with a gigantic 15-foot-tall inflatable fez hat that read, “Shrine Circuses Abuse Animals.” At each stop, our massive inflatable got hundreds of people to take a leaflet explaining how elephants and other animals are beaten and chained for the circus.

Leather Is a Dirty Business!Image from sludge dump.Three PETA supporters doused themselves in black sludge outside an Urban Outfitters location in Miami Beach, Florida, to illustrate that leather is a dirty business that causes tremendous suffering for cows and calves as well as widespread environmental devastation. Urban Outfitters employees and passersby watched in awe and took photos and videos of our stunning spectacle. We handed out dozens of leaflets, and many people stopped to watch the video we played on our TV. They seemed shocked to see the atrocities that animals in the leather industry endure for fashion items such as jackets, wallets, belts, and shoes.

Promise Broken: EGYPTAIR Shipped Monkeys to Their Deaths AGAINImage from EGYPTAIR protest.PETA supporters descended on the EGYPTAIR terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport following reports that the airline would be shipping hundreds of endangered long-tailed macaques into the U.S. to be used in invasive and deadly laboratory experiments, a blatant violation of its pledge last year to stop transporting primates. Travelers and airline staff were surprised to see the protesters, including an airport agent who heard the chanting downstairs and came out, saying, “If I wasn’t working today, I would be out here with you!” and two sympathetic terminal agents who called EGYPTAIR’s service desk to inform them of the protest and get answers from them.

Thai Coconut Milk: Forced Monkey LaborImage from Whole Foods protest.PETA supporters rained on Whole Foods’ parade during its grand opening of a new store in Jersey City, with our giant 8-foot-tall “crying monkey” chained next to a huge coconut. We reached hundreds of people waiting in line, and every person we spoke with was extremely empathetic about the monkeys suffering in the Thai coconut milk industry.

Free Corky! The Longest-Held Captive Orca in the WorldImage from SeaWorld protest.Musician, actor, vegan activist, and longtime PETA supporter Christopher von Uckermann allowed himself to be trapped inside a large bubble in order to highlight the misery that Corky, who has been forced to swim in tiny tanks for the past 54 years, endures day in and day out. Christopher frantically moved around in the small enclosure, as if trying to escape. Toward the end of the demo, he joined animal rights advocates, who loudly chanted, “Send Corky home!” and he asked a photographer to take a group shot to share with his 2.9 million online followers.

First-Ever Female Sisyphus Conquers Cheese Challenge on World Vegan DayImage from vegan cheese giveaway. For World Vegan Day, PETA’s female Sisyphus turned heads while pushing our giant vegan cheese ball up a hill constructed on the busiest block in Nashville, Tennessee. Sisyphus in Greek mythology was condemned to a lifetime of pushing an immense boulder up a steep hill, only for it to come rolling back down every time he neared the top. Unlike in the story, our Sisyphus won’t toil futilely for eternity, as we handed out about 200 vegan Babybel cheeses in under an hour. Many passersby remarked how good it was and asked where they could buy it. PETA’s Sisyphus showed Music City that with the abundance of delicious vegan cheese available, going vegan isn’t an impossible task

PETA ‘Monkey’ Crashed Local Neuroscience Convention, Causing an UproarImage from NIH protest.A large assembly of PETA supporters crashed the Society for Neuroscience’s annual meeting, led by an 8-foot-tall inflatable monkey representing Beamish, a real monkey who has been imprisoned in a National Institutes of Health (NIH) laboratory since 2010. Our message about switching to non-animal research methods resulted in several fruitful exchanges, including a wonderful conversation with two supportive conference attendees, who jumped at the opportunity to wear PETA shirts into the conference and asked how they could become more involved with our efforts! With our 4-foot blowup of real images from inside NIH-funded laboratories, along with over 30 protesters, vivisectors in attendance were reminded that we’ll continue protesting their events until NIH adopts human-relevant and cruelty-free research methods.

Sister Helen Prejean, Patty Kenkins (Monster, Wonder Woman) and the DPIC releases its 2023 Year-End Report

Over the past decade, public opinion and legal perspectives on capital punishment have undergone significant shifts. The decreasing number of executions and death sentences can be attributed to several factors, including concerns about wrongful convictions, the cost of capital punishment, and evolving moral and ethical considerations.

Concerns about Wrongful Convictions. One of the primary reasons behind the declining use of the death penalty is the growing awareness of the potential for wrongful convictions. Several high-profile cases have exposed flaws in the justice system, leading to the exoneration of individuals who were wrongfully sentenced to death. These cases have raised doubts about the reliability and fairness of capital punishment.

The advent of DNA testing and advancements in forensic science have played a crucial role in revealing wrongful convictions. The ability to re-examine evidence and uncover new information has provided a compelling argument against the irrevocable nature of the death penalty. As a result, many individuals and organizations have become more hesitant to support its use.

The Death Penalty

The Cost of Capital Punishment. Another significant factor contributing to the decline in the use of the death penalty is the exorbitant cost associated with capital punishment. The lengthy and complex legal process involved in death penalty cases, including multiple appeals and extended periods of incarceration, can result in substantial financial burdens for states.

Studies have consistently shown that the cost of prosecuting a death penalty case is significantly higher than that of a non-capital case. These expenses include the costs of specialized legal representation, lengthy trials, and increased security measures. As states face budget constraints and prioritize funding for other essential services, the financial burden of capital punishment becomes increasingly difficult to justify.

Evolving Moral and Ethical Considerations. Changing societal attitudes towards punishment and the value of human life have also played a role in the declining use of the death penalty. As the public becomes more aware of alternative sentencing options and rehabilitation programs, the idea of taking a life as a form of punishment is being questioned.

Religious and moral beliefs have also influenced the shift in public opinion. Many religious groups and organizations have voiced concerns about the ethical implications of capital punishment. The belief in the potential for redemption and the sanctity of life has led to calls for more humane alternatives to the death penalty.

The Future of Capital Punishment in the United States. As the number of executions and death sentences continues to decline, it raises questions about the future of capital punishment in the United States. Some states have already taken steps to abolish or place moratoriums on the death penalty, while others are reevaluating their policies.

Public opinion polls consistently show a shift towards favoring alternatives to the death penalty. However, there are still proponents who argue for its retention as a necessary deterrent and retribution for heinous crimes.

Ultimately, the declining use of the death penalty reflects a broader societal shift towards a more nuanced and compassionate approach to criminal justice. As the United States continues to grapple with the complexities of capital punishment, it is clear that the conversation surrounding its use will persist, and the debate over its morality and efficacy will continue.

Twenty-nine states — the majority — have either “abolished the death penalty or paused them by executive action,” according to DPIC. And only five states, Alabama, Florida, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas, conducted executions, “tying 2016 with the lowest number of states in 20 years. Together, Texas and Florida

accounted for more than half of this years 24 executions.”

This year did see an increase to 24 executions from last year’s 18 executions, which “can be attributed to Floridas return to executions after a lengthy pause as its governor launched a presidential campaign,” the report noted.

DPIC also points out that Gallup released a poll last month that found that for the first time since 2000, when it began asking whether respondents believed the death penalty was fairly applied, 50% said it was not fairly imposed, while 47% believe it is. That’s a five-point increase in the percentage since Gallup last measured it in 2018.

Too often, when a person is about to be executed in our country, the governors, prosecutors, and politicians calling for their deaths describe them as “monsters” who have forfeited their right to live.

Patty Jenkins - Wikipedia

Patty Jenkins, Film Director, Screen Writer, Film Producer writes that No one is born a monster and …. Many, perhaps the majority, were subjected to horrific physical, sexual, or psychological abuse from the time they were infants. Often, they’re people who have severe mental illness or serious drug and alcohol addictions. I know this because, in 2003, I wrote and directed a film, “Monster,” about a woman often described as one. Her name was Aileen Wuornos; she was convicted of killing and robbing seven men when she was working as a sex worker along Florida highways in 1989 and 1990. The state executed her in 2002.

Aileen was born to a teenage mother and a father who died in prison. Abandoned by her mother when she was four, she was legally adopted by her grandparents, both of whom were alcoholics. Her grandfather physically and sexually abused her, and at 14, she was raped by a family friend and gave birth to a baby boy whom she placed for adoption.

Thrown out of the house when she was 15, she supported herself as a sex worker for the rest of her life.

It’s a tragic story, but one that is all too common among the individuals who are sent to death row.

So far this year, 23 people have been executed. Most, if not all, had been abused, neglected, or abandoned as children. To read the bios of each is to understand that, like Aileen, too many never had a chance. They weren’t monsters; they were the products of a society that failed them from the time they were born to the time they were executed.

How can our society fail to recognize that “monsters” like Aileen and others who are demonized in the courts and the media were created, not born?

We are killing individuals who never got to live a life free from fear, cruelty, abandonment, abuse, and hate. Death Penalty Focus has been trying to stop this cycle of violence for 35 years. I support them because they believe, as I do, that a civilized society doesn’t kill its citizens, even those who have committed egregious crimes.

Please join me in supporting DPF. You will help them continue their mission to educate, advocate, and organize. They believe, as I do, that the more our citizens learn about our broken death penalty system, the closer we will get to abolishing it.

A Note from Sister Helen Prejean, CSJ

Dear Friends,

“Look at my face when you’re there. You have a dignity no one can take from you. I’ll be the face of dignity and love for you.”

Those are the words I’ve spoken to each of the individuals I’ve accompanied to the execution chamber in the last 30 years. I say it because when the government straps these people down and kills them, they are trying to deny them their dignity and their inherent self-worth, and I refuse to allow them to do that.

Our government has executed nearly 1600 individuals since the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty in 1976. Sixteen hundred people killed after they were rendered entirely defenseless. That is torture, according to both the UN Convention against Torture and the Catholic Church. It’s why I’m asking you to join me in supporting Death Penalty Focus because they believe, as I do, that it is incumbent on all of us to do whatever we can to stop the torture of our fellow citizens. They’ve worked tirelessly for 35 years to abolish this brutal punishment and need our help in the struggle.

“I’m asking you to join me in supporting Death Penalty Focus because they believe, as I do, that it is incumbent on all of us to do whatever we can to stop the torture of our fellow citizens.”

There are so many reasons we need to abolish this inhumane punishment. The racism is undeniable. The legacy of slavery lives on in the criminal justice system. How else can we explain the fact that the percentage of Black people account for only 14% of the U.S. population but comprise 41% of our country’s death row population? Innocence is another factor. More than 195 people have been released from death row since 1973 based on evidence of their innocence. How many more were executed who were innocent? How many more innocent people are on death row now awaiting execution?

It is up to us to end this. We, the people, must do what our leaders refuse to do. We can succeed, but it will take more effort, time, and, yes, more resources. So, please donate any amount with which you’re comfortable and join me and my friends at Death Penalty Focus and, together, we will prevail.

Eighteen Children Under the Age of 18 File Climate Lawsuit Against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

Children File Climate Lawsuit Against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

A group of eighteen children has filed a federal constitutional climate lawsuit against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for failing to address climate change adequately. This lawsuit is part of the youth climate litigation wave, where young people are using the legal system to hold governments and corporations accountable for their contributions to climate change. Supported by Our Children’s Trust, the plaintiffs aim to compel the government to take immediate action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect their constitutional rights. The outcome of this lawsuit will have far-reaching implications for the fight against climate change and highlights the importance of youth activism and intergenerational justice.

On Sunday, December 10, a group of eighteen children under the age of 18 took a significant step in the fight against climate change. They filed a new federal constitutional climate lawsuit against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the U.S. District Court in the Central District of California.

18 kids sue Environmental Protection Agency in US over climate changeThe lawsuit, which marks a growing trend of young people taking legal action to protect their future, alleges that the EPA has violated their constitutional rights by failing to take adequate action to address climate change. The plaintiffs argue that the government’s inaction on climate change infringes upon their rights to life, liberty, and property, as well as their rights to a stable climate system.

This lawsuit is part of a broader movement known as the “youth climate litigation wave,” where young people are using the legal system to hold governments and corporations accountable for their contributions to climate change. The plaintiffs in this case are supported by the organization Our Children’s Trust, which has been instrumental in supporting similar lawsuits across the United States.California kids sue the EPA over fossil fuels and climate change : NPR

The children involved in the lawsuit come from diverse backgrounds and regions across the country. They range in age from 9 to 20 and represent a generation deeply concerned about the future of the planet they will inherit. Their collective goal is to compel the government to take immediate and effective action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect their constitutional rights.

While some may question the legal standing of these young plaintiffs, the courts have increasingly recognized the legitimacy of climate change lawsuits brought by young people. In 2015, a group of young people filed a similar lawsuit against the U.S. government, arguing that it had violated their constitutional rights by promoting the use of fossil fuels. The case, known as Juliana v. United States, is currently pending in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

These lawsuits highlight the growing recognition that climate change is not just an environmental issue but a matter of intergenerational justice. The consequences of climate change will be felt most severely by future generations, who have had little to no say in the decisions that have led to the current crisis. By taking legal action, young people are asserting their right to a livable future and demanding that those in power take responsibility for their actions.

Regardless of the outcome of this particular lawsuit, the fact that young people are mobilizing and using the legal system to address climate change sends a powerful message. It demonstrates their determination to protect their rights and their willingness to hold those in power accountable for their actions.

As the impacts of climate change continue to worsen, it is crucial that governments and institutions take immediate and decisive action to mitigate its effects. The voices of young people, who will bear the brunt of these impacts, must be heard and taken seriously. By filing this lawsuit, these eighteen children are not only fighting for their own future but for the future of generations to come.

The outcome of this lawsuit will have far-reaching implications, not only for the EPA but for the broader fight against climate change. It serves as a reminder that the youth are not passive bystanders in this crisis, but active agents of change. Their actions should inspire us all to take a closer look at our own contributions to climate change and work towards a more sustainable and just future.

Making a Murderer: False Confessions, Wrongful Convictions was held yesterday

Moderated by DPF President Mike Farrell, in conversation with Dr. Richard Leo, Professor of Law and Social Psychology at the University of San Francisco School of Law, the discussion will examine how police-induced false confessions are a leading cause of wrongful convictions.

Understanding the Issue. Yesterday, a thought-provoking event called “Making a Murderer: False Confessions, Wrongful Convictions” took place, shedding light on a critical issue within the justice system. False confessions and wrongful convictions have become an alarming concern, leading to the wrongful imprisonment of innocent individuals.

The Impact of False Confessions. False confessions occur when individuals admit to crimes they did not commit. These confessions can be obtained through various methods, including coercion, intimidation, or manipulation by law enforcement officials. Unfortunately, false confessions can have severe consequences, leading to wrongful convictions and the loss of freedom for innocent people.

One of the most alarming aspects of false confessions is that they often involve vulnerable individuals, such as juveniles or those with mental disabilities. These individuals may be more susceptible to manipulation and coercion, making them easy targets for obtaining false admissions of guilt.

Factors Contributing to Wrongful Convictions. Wrongful convictions can occur due to a combination of factors, including false confessions. Other factors that contribute to wrongful convictions include:

  • Flawed forensic evidence
  • Witness misidentification
  • Prosecutorial misconduct
  • Inadequate defense representation
  • Jury bias

These factors, when combined, can lead to a grave miscarriage of justice, resulting in innocent individuals being imprisoned for crimes they did not commit.

The Importance of Raising Awareness. Events like “Making a Murderer: False Confessions, Wrongful Convictions” play a crucial role in raising awareness about this issue. By highlighting real-life cases and sharing the stories of those who have been wrongfully convicted, these events aim to educate the public and the legal community about the flaws in the justice system.

Increased awareness can lead to important changes in policies and procedures to prevent false confessions and reduce the risk of wrongful convictions. It also encourages the development and implementation of improved investigative techniques and safeguards to protect the rights of the accused.

Reforming the Justice System. In recent years, there have been efforts to reform the justice system to address the issue of false confessions and wrongful convictions. These reforms include:

  • Recording interrogations: By recording the entire interrogation process, it becomes easier to identify instances of coercion or manipulation.
  • Improved training for law enforcement: Providing comprehensive training on proper interrogation techniques and recognizing the signs of false confessions can help prevent their occurrence.
  • Enhanced forensic science standards: Implementing stricter standards for forensic evidence analysis helps ensure the accuracy and reliability of evidence presented in court.
  • Increased access to post-conviction DNA testing: Allowing access to DNA testing post-conviction can help prove innocence and prevent wrongful convictions.

The event “Making a Murderer: False Confessions, Wrongful Convictions” serves as a reminder of the flaws within the justice system and the urgent need for reform. By raising awareness, advocating for change, and implementing safeguards, we can strive towards a more just and fair legal system, where false confessions and wrongful convictions are minimized, and the rights of the accused are protected.

Last weekend, the U.S. broke its own record for most mass shootings in a year, A Clear example of Republican inaction costing Americans’ lives

Over the past weekend, the United States witnessed a tragic milestone – breaking its own record for the highest number of mass shootings in a single year. This disheartening news sheds light on the alarming increase in such incidents and prompts a necessary reflection on the factors contributing to this disturbing trend.

The Rising Tide of Mass Shootings. Mass shootings have become an all-too-familiar headline in recent years, leaving communities shattered and individuals traumatized. The U.S. has long struggled with gun violence, but the surge in mass shootings is particularly concerning.

In 2021, the United States surpassed its previous record for the highest number of mass shootings in a year. The grim tally of these tragic events serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for effective measures to address this crisis. While the causes of mass shootings are complex and multifaceted, it is crucial to examine some of the contributing factors.

Understanding the Contributing Factors

1. Accessibility to Firearms: The ease of access to firearms in the United States is a significant factor contributing to the frequency and severity of mass shootings. Stricter gun control measures, including comprehensive background checks and limitations on high-capacity magazines, have been proposed as potential solutions to reduce the incidence of such events.

2. Mental Health Concerns: Mental health plays a crucial role in understanding the motivations behind mass shootings. While it is essential to avoid stigmatizing individuals with mental health conditions, it is equally important to improve access to mental healthcare services and promote early intervention to identify and address potential risks.

3. Social Alienation and Isolation: Feelings of social alienation and isolation can lead to a sense of resentment and frustration, potentially fueling violent behavior. Building strong communities and fostering inclusivity can help mitigate these feelings and create support networks for individuals who may otherwise resort to violence.

4. Media Influence: The media’s coverage of mass shootings can inadvertently contribute to the problem. Extensive media coverage of perpetrators and their motives may inadvertently inspire copycat crimes. Responsible reporting that focuses on the victims and the broader societal impact can help minimize this unintended consequence.

Addressing the complex issue of mass shootings requires a multifaceted approach involving government, communities, and individuals. Here are some potential strategies to consider:

1. Comprehensive Gun Control Measures: Implementing stricter regulations on firearms, including enhanced background checks and restrictions on high-capacity magazines, can help reduce the likelihood of mass shootings.

2. Mental Health Support: Improving access to mental health services and promoting awareness can aid in early intervention and support for individuals at risk of resorting to violence.

3. Community Engagement: Building strong communities that foster inclusivity, social support, and a sense of belonging can help mitigate feelings of isolation and reduce the likelihood of individuals turning to violence.

4. Responsible Media Reporting: Media outlets can play a crucial role in minimizing the unintended consequences of mass shooting coverage by focusing on the victims, the broader societal impact, and avoiding excessive attention on the perpetrators.

The recent record-breaking number of mass shootings in the United States serves as a sobering reminder of the urgent need to address this escalating crisis. By understanding the contributing factors and implementing comprehensive strategies, we can work towards creating a safer society for all. It is imperative that we come together as a nation to tackle this issue and prevent further loss of innocent lives.

The Urgent Need for Gun Control Legislation in the Wake of Tragic Mass Shootings

As David Hogg from Leaders We Deserve was preparing his remarks for a vigil for victims of gun violence, he noticed his phone buzzing with notifications about another mass shooting. Reports were coming in about “many victims dead” at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. This unfortunate incident once again highlights the urgent need for gun control legislation.

The fact that, on the very same day, cowardly Senate Republicans filibustered common-sense, life-saving legislation like assault weapons ban and universal background checks is deeply concerning. It is disheartening to witness the lack of action from lawmakers to address the growing issue of gun violence in our society.

Gun violence has become an epidemic in the United States, with mass shootings occurring far too frequently. The devastating consequences of these incidents are felt not only by the victims and their families, but also by the entire nation. It is time for our leaders to prioritize the safety and well-being of their constituents by enacting comprehensive gun control measures.

An assault weapons ban is a crucial step towards curbing gun violence. These military-style weapons have no place in civilian hands and are designed for one purpose only: to inflict maximum harm. By prohibiting the sale and possession of assault weapons, we can significantly reduce the potential for mass shootings and save countless lives.

Universal background checks are another essential component of effective gun control. Currently, there are loopholes that allow individuals to purchase firearms without undergoing a thorough background check. This puts guns in the hands of people who may have a history of violence or mental illness. By implementing universal background checks, we can ensure that only responsible and law-abiding citizens have access to firearms.

Opponents of gun control often argue that it infringes upon their Second Amendment rights. However, it is important to note that the right to bear arms is not an unlimited right. Just as there are restrictions on other constitutional rights, such as the freedom of speech and the right to assembly, there should be reasonable limitations on the right to own firearms.

Furthermore, it is crucial to address the root causes of gun violence, such as mental health issues and societal factors. Access to mental health services should be improved, and efforts should be made to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness. Additionally, we must work towards creating a society that values empathy, compassion, and conflict resolution, rather than resorting to violence as a solution.

It is disheartening to see the lack of political will to enact meaningful gun control measures. The lives of innocent people are being lost every day due to gun violence, and it is our duty as a society to take action. We must hold our elected officials accountable and demand that they prioritize the safety and well-being of their constituents over political interests.

In conclusion, the recent mass shooting at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for gun control legislation. An assault weapons ban and universal background checks are essential measures to prevent further tragedies. It is time for our leaders to put aside partisan politics and work towards creating a safer and more secure society for all.

Parkland shooting survivor David Hogg launches organization to guide a "new generation" into politics : r/politics

We started Leaders We Deserve because we can’t afford to let politicians keep failing us on the most important issues we face, like gun safety reform. Help elect a new generation of courageous leaders?

Yesterday was a clear example of Republican inaction costing Americans’ lives.

Our mission here at Leaders We Deserve is to replace these GOP dinosaurs with young, bold leaders who will put our issues front and center. Leaders like Nadarius Clark, who we just helped elect as the youngest member of the Virginia Assembly. Leaders like Rep. Maxwell Frost, the first ever Generation Z member of Congress.

We’ve made tremendous progress this year, but we need 2024 to be even bigger. We’re gearing up for the most important election season of our lives.

The Importance of Replacing Animal Tests in Medical Research

Animal testing has long been a controversial topic in the field of medical research. While it has played a significant role in advancing our understanding of diseases and developing new treatments, there is a growing consensus that we need to find alternatives to using animals in testing. Replacing animal tests does not mean putting human patients at risk, nor does it mean halting medical progress. Instead, it offers an opportunity to improve the quality and humanity of our science.

The Limitations of Animal Testing. Animal testing has been a cornerstone of medical research for decades. It has helped scientists gain insights into the efficacy and safety of new drugs, as well as the mechanisms underlying various diseases. However, there are inherent limitations to relying solely on animal models.

Firstly, animals and humans are not identical. While animals share many biological similarities with humans, there are also crucial differences that can affect the outcome of experiments. This can lead to misleading results and potential risks when applying findings to human patients.

Secondly, animal testing often involves subjecting animals to painful procedures and potentially harmful substances. This raises ethical concerns and questions about the morality of using animals in such experiments. As a society, we should strive to minimize harm and find alternative methods that are more humane.

The Advantages of Replacing Animal Tests. Replacing animals used in testing with alternative methods offers numerous advantages. Firstly, it allows researchers to utilize more accurate models that better mimic human physiology. This can lead to more reliable results and a greater understanding of how treatments may affect human patients.

One such alternative method is in vitro testing, which involves studying cells or tissues in a controlled laboratory environment. This approach allows researchers to observe the direct effects of substances on human cells, providing valuable insights without the need for animal subjects.

Another promising alternative is the use of computer models and simulations. These powerful tools can simulate complex biological processes, allowing researchers to predict the effects of drugs and treatments on the human body. This not only saves time and resources but also reduces the need for animal testing.

Ensuring Patient Safety and Medical Progress. One concern often raised is that replacing animal tests may put human patients at risk or hinder medical progress. However, this is a misconception. The goal of medical research is to improve human health, and replacing animal tests aligns with this objective.

By utilizing more accurate models and alternative methods, researchers can better evaluate the safety and efficacy of potential treatments. This ensures that when new drugs or therapies are tested in human clinical trials, there is a higher likelihood of success and a reduced risk of adverse reactions.

Moreover, replacing animal tests does not mean halting medical progress. On the contrary, it encourages innovation and the development of new techniques that can advance our understanding of diseases and improve patient outcomes. It challenges scientists to think outside the box and find creative solutions that are both scientifically rigorous and ethically sound.

The Path Towards a More Humane Science. Replacing animal tests is not an overnight process, but rather a gradual transition towards a more humane and scientifically robust approach to medical research. It requires collaboration between scientists, regulators, and funding agencies to support the development and validation of alternative methods.

Furthermore, education and awareness are crucial in promoting the adoption of alternative testing methods. By highlighting the limitations of animal testing and showcasing the advancements in alternative approaches, we can foster a greater understanding and acceptance of these methods within the scientific community and society as a whole.

In conclusion, replacing animal tests in medical research is not about jeopardizing patient safety or hindering progress. It is about embracing more accurate and humane methods that can enhance the quality and humanity of our science. By investing in alternative approaches, we can pave the way for a future where medical research is both effective and ethical.
