The much-loved dolphin pod of Monkey Mia has a new member, newborn calf Oboe, who was born on December 1.
Oboe is the seventh calf of 30-year-old Piccolo, and the pair made their first appearance together two days after Oboe was born.
Monkey Mia Dolphin Experience, which manages tourist interactions with the dolphins, is reminding people to stay out of the water when the dolphins are around, and to stay 100m away when boating, as Oboe is very vulnerable in the first eight weeks of life.
The group has advised visitors morning encounters will run slightly differently to ensure the mother and calf’s welfare, and sessions may be over by 9.30am for the next few weeks.
Oboe’s name keeps in line with the musical theme of Piccolo’s offspring, which include Flute and Piper.
