NEW BEDFORD — The four-day Whale City Comedy Festival kicks of on Aug. 31.
Billed as the SouthCoast’s first and only multi-day celebration of stand-up comedy, it features top comedians from around the nation who promise to deliver hilarious sets of diverse comedy styles during Labor Day weekend.
The fest features seven shows, each night with a new lineup of acts. The headlines are Anthony Devito best known for performances on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” and “Comedy Central Stand Up Presents,” and Sean Donnelly best known for appearing on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.”

Other comedians include Keko White, Ray Harrington, Doug Key, Rachel Williams, Gray West, Alex Quow, Mo Mussa and Emily Ruskowski.
Ashlie Thatcher, who founded Whale City Comedy in October 2022, noticed that there was not much comedy offered in New Bedford and wanted to fill that gap by bringing live comedy to the SouthCoast.
“We’re so close to bigger cities like Boston or Providence, which is where people tend to go and outsource for their entertainment,” Thatcher said in a previous Standard-Times interview. “So that was why it was really important to me to bring that back home.”

On the heels of the comedy nights last fall, she has expanded on the idea with this new festival. The event kicks off Aug. 31 at Buzzards Bay Brewing in Westport at 7 p.m. with Harrington along with Key, Ruskowki, Jason Codova and Chris Post.
The other three days will be hosted at Gallery X at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Audiences are allowed to bring their own alcoholic beverages to the venue. There are limited tickets, and only sold online at the Whale City Comedy official website.
“I promise you’ll laugh your [butt] off at these shows,” Thatcher added.
