Thai vegetarian festival returns after COVID hiatus

PHUKET, Thailand (Reuters) – Hundreds of devotees flocked to temples and staged processions to celebrate the annual vegetarian festival this week on the island of Phuket in southern Thailand, being held for the first time after the COVID-19 pandemic eased.

Worshippers mainly from the local Chinese community pierce their faces and walk over hot coals in the name of purification.

They also give up meat, sex and alcohol in the ninth lunar month of the Chinese calendar to achieve good health and peace of mind, in a tradition that goes back 150 years.

“It’s like we have done our part in paying respect to the gods, our mentor,” said one devotee, who gave only her nickname Pop.

“It’s part of a merit-making ritual and in return, I feel that my life has gotten better.”

World Vegetarian Day: Here’s how you can celebrate!

Did you know that India has the lowest per capita meat consumption in the world and that about 10% of the world’s population is vegetarian? On October 1, we recognise the advantages of being a vegetarian and acknowledge that a vegetarian diet may be really delightful. It’s World Vegetarian Day, so break out the tofu, cheese pizza, veggie burgers, and other meatless treats!

Every year, hundreds of people change their lifestyles to one that is healthier and more ethical. These people care about animal welfare and want to put an end to animal cruelty. They also want to live long, healthy lives, avoid the dangers of heart disease, and maintain attractive bodies by living in harmony with the Earth. Who are these individuals? They are vegetarians, and World Vegetarian Day honours their choice to give up eating meat and other animal products in favour of a more compassionate lifestyle.

Here’s Everything you can do to Celebrate the Day:

Distribute the veg wealth

Become a vegetarian for the day even if you’re not one already. Share some vegetarian cuisine with your coworkers at work or at school. You don’t want to exert any additional effort. Purchase a prepared veggie tray. Even the most ardent meat eaters enjoy veggie trays.

Try a restaurant’s meatless menu.

Are you the kind of person who quickly scans the vegetarian options on the menu before moving on? Today, take advantage of the chance to look into the vegetarian options and choose a vegetarian supper. The future? It might even be tastier than that steak.

Go shopping at a farmer’s market.

Your local farmer’s market likely has some of the tastiest and freshest produce available. You may discover a wide variety of meatless dishes to suit any taste or mood now that fall is in the air, including pumpkin!

Why Should you go Vegetarian?

Beneficial for the environment

Going meatless helps the environment by saving fossil fuels in addition to animals. Did you know that whereas producing 1 calorie of beef requires 78 calories of fossil fuel, producing 1 calorie of soybeans only requires 1 calorie? That makes the manufacturing of meat 780% more efficient!

Beneficial for your physique

On a vegetarian diet, you often eat a lot of the nutrients that are sometimes absent from meat, such as fibre, folic acid, vitamins C and E, magnesium, unsaturated fat, and a tonne of phytochemicals. Lower cholesterol, a lower risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure, and a healthier weight result from this.

Vegetarian cuisine can be tasty

It’s a common misconception that meatless diets are boring and unappealing, but that’s not always the case. Veggie-based pancakes can be made using almost any vegetable.

23 Wild Horses Killed During Cruel Nevada Helicopter Roundup

Twenty-three wild horses – including five wild foals – have tragically died as part of the 2022 Triple B Wild Horse roundup in Nevada, while more than 1,800 others have forever lost their freedom.

The roundup, which concluded Aug. 25, noted contractors had shipped 1,849 wild horses — including 623 stallions, 897 mares, and 329 foals — to off-site corrals and a federal adoption program known to result in wild horse slaughter.

Lady Freethinker sent an observer to the roundup — conducted by the federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and with a stated goal of removing 1,800 wild horses — when it started in mid-July.

Four horses died within the first four days of the roundup, in which a helicopter relentlessly pursued the iconic wild animals over mountainous terrain in heat that reached 95 degrees.

We predicted then that many more horses would suffer and die before the roundup’s end and sent our petition to stop cruel helicopter-assisted gathers, since signed by more than 44,000 people, to the BLM.

But the gather continued, with the BLM’s daily reports detailing a death toll of 23 wild horses — six of whom died specifically from the operation.

The first roundup-caused casualty was a 2-year-old mare who died unexpectedly, with a necropsy reporting compromised lungs, likely from respiratory pneumonia.

Three horses — a 3-year-old sorrel stallion, a 6-year-old Palomino stallion, and a 7-year old bay mare — all died after breaking their necks.

Two foals also tragically lost their lives due to ‘acute’ injuries, including a bay foal whose leg was broken when kicked by another horse and a sorrel foal who died unexpectedly from colic.

Three other foals also died because of the roundup, including a 4-month-old foal killed for a “pre-existing” fractured leg and including two youngsters with reported weak tendons — a birth condition which can resolve on its own without human intervention, according to veterinary experts.

The other defenseless horses killed — most likely by gunshot to the brain — due to what the BLM describes as “pre-existing” conditions:

  • A 1-year-old filly for colic
  • A 3-year-old mare reported as being blind
  • A 3-year-old mare reportedly missing a right eye/blindness
  • A 3-year-old mare killed for a club foot
  • A 5-year-old sorrel mare for a broken front leg
  • A 5-year-old bay stallion for swayback
  • A 5-year-old bay mare for a fractured back
  • A 7-year-old mare reportedly missing a left eye/blindness
  • A 10-year-old sorrel mare for a club foot
  • A 20-year-old stallion killed over a fractured leg
  • A 20-year-old mare for severe tooth loss
  • A 20-year-old mare unable to maintain a body score condition of 3
  • A 20-year-old stallion unable to maintain a body score condition of 3
  • A 20-year-old stallion with a reported missing left eye/blindness

The BLM initially declared that up to 100 mares would be treated with humane fertility vaccines — an alternative approach to removing horses from their home lands long touted by Lady Freethinker and other wild horse advocacy groups, including nonprofits Return to Freedom and the American Wild Horse Campaign (AWHC).

But at the end of the gather, the BLM reduced that by half – saying in late August that “up to 50” mares would be treated and released in the next 30 days.

As of Sept. 27 — more than a month after that announcement — the BLM’s gather reports showed the grand total of mares treated with fertility control was zero.

That reversal makes us — and other advocacy groups — question how seriously the BLM is taking the established science that these vaccines are effective over the long run and a much better alternative to cruelly gathering up wild horses.

“Return to Freedom strongly supports the use of reversible fertility control as a tool to halt roundups by slowing (not stopping) herd growth, but treating about 6 percent of the remaining mares will not make an appreciable difference in reducing the size or frequency of future roundups,” the organization said in an online post.

While the BLM’s stated purpose for the roundup was to “prevent unnecessary degradation of public lands” and also to reduce the number of wild horses in an area “where there currently is not enough water and/or forage to support the number of horses in the area,” the agency continues to allocate grazing allotments for private ranchers.

Triple B roundup

Return to Freedom notes the BLM wants only between 482 and 821 wild horses on the Triple B’s more than 1.6 million acres – or about one horse per 3,320 acres.

Meanwhile, as of 2017, the BLM had allocated to private ranchers 87,226 Animal Unit Months (AUMS)  – with each AUM representing a month’s forage for one horse, one cow-calf pair, or five sheep.

So while wild horses are being shipped off enmasse to reportedly ration forage, livestock allocations allow an estimated 7,300 cows or 36,000 sheep to continue grazing, according to calculations from AWHC.

Contractors shipped the captured wild horses off-site to the Indian Lakes off-range wild horse and burro corral in Fallon, Nevada, and to the Southerland off-range corral in Utah, where they will be prepared to enter the agency’s Adoption Incentive Program, according to the BLM’s website.

That same program has sent an undetermined number of wild horses to slaughter, with a New York Times exposé indicating the BLM approved applicants with known connections to horse slaughter and a new AWHC report citing more than 1,000 innocent horses slaughtered as a result of the federal adoption program.

An LFT analysis of 20 helicopter-assisted roundups in 2021 revealed that 245 wild horses died during the operations, including from broken necks, snapped bones, lacerations, and unexpected heart failure.

If you haven’t already, please sign our petition urging the BLM to find more compassionate alternatives to these cruel, helicopter-assisted roundups.

Pelicans Saved from the Brink of Starvation Released Back to the Wild

A dozen brown pelicans rescued from the brink of starvation and death took their flight back to freedom along the California coast, following dedicated efforts from wildlife rehabilitators.

Starting in May, a mysterious illness crippled hundreds of the beautiful birds. The Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center, a nonprofit in Huntingdon Beach,  took in about 70 of the pelicans who showed up on the shoreline emaciated, dehydrated, injured, and riddled with internal parasites

The rehabilitators treated and carefully monitored the survivors, then transported the 12 they deemed fully recovered to Corona Del Mar and released them.

Wildlife officials put bands on the birds so that if they show up again they can rapidly receive help, while providing analysts with more insight into the cause of the starvation.

“Basically, it just seems like a mass starvation event,” Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center Veterinarian Elizabeth Woods told Spectrum news. “They were found all over the beaches, emaciated, anemic, dehydrated, and with the features not waterproofed anymore.”

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife reported the region’s rehabilitators took in more than 700 pelicans — including at least 130 who put on weight, demonstrated normal behavior, and have since been released.

Necropsies on birds who did not survive showed most weren’t suffering from disease, leading scientists to also posit that starvation is the cause but leaving unanswered questions.

“Starvation is still believed to be the cause of the health problems,” the department’s spokesperson Tim Daly told The Mercury News. “We don’t know yet what’s caused the starvation.”

Several of the birds also sustained injuries from fishing gear.

Wood said the released pelicans will serve as a sentinel group, with staff watching to see how they fare in the wild before releasing additional birds still in recovery. She added that anyone who finds a sick pelican should call wildlife experts and to not touch the birds.

We are overjoyed to learn that these animals have regained their health and freedom and thank the caring wildlife rehabilitators for doing all they can to help save these suffering animals!

Victory for Companion Animals! California Bans Cruel Chemical Tests on Cats and Dogs

California has made U.S. history by passing the first-ever law that bans cruelly poisoning dogs and cats to death under the name of consumer “safety,” according to news reports.

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law Senate Bill 879, also known as the “Prohibiting Extraneous Testing” or PET Act, which bans toxicity tests that expose dogs and cats to industrial and consumer products — including pesticides, chemicals, and food additives.

In the cruel tests, workers subject animals to high doses of chemicals — often at levels up to 1,000 times higher than humans might experience — and which can lead to the animals suffering from convulsions, vomiting, paralysis, bleeding, lethargy and death, according to the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.

“For many families, including my own, pets are beloved companions that enrich our lives every day,” Newsom said in a statement. “I’m proud to sign this legislation to advance our state’s leadership on animal welfare by ending cruel and unnecessary testing on dogs and cats.”

An established body of scientific research shows that products that pass safety tests when used on animals can lead to human harm, given genetic differences between species. As such, the drawbacks of testing on vulnerable animals are increasingly being recognized and denounced by compassionate scientists, as well as animal advocates and politicians.

Yet every year, over 100 million innocent animals suffer and die in senseless laboratory experiments — with one estimate from the Humane Society estimating every year upwards of 60,000 dogs are used in cruel experiments in the United States alone. Thankfully, California legislators  — with the passage of this bill — are moving toward more compassionate mandates and paving the way forward for other caring states.

“Animal testing that has no scientific value and causes terrible pain and suffering is inhumane, unnecessary, and cruel,” said bill sponsor Sen. Scott Wiener  in a statement. “The PET Act protects cats and dogs from this type of testing, and helps these animals live long, healthy lives.”

The bill also establishes penalties for violators, including civil violations and monetary fines of up to $5,000 per animal per day.

We are heartened by this progress for animals! But there is still so much to be done — including modernizing antiquated federal mandates that force animals to continue to suffer and die at the expense of both the animals and human health.

If you haven’t already, please sign our petition urging Congress to pass the FDA Modernization Act, which would allow humane and effective alternatives to replace cruel tests on animals.
