In Uganda, a 20-year-old man is facing the death penalty after being charged with “aggravated homosexuality,” the BBC reported.

His lawyer, Justine Balya, told Reuters that the man—accused of unlawful sexual intercourse with a 41-year-old man—was the first to be prosecuted under draconian anti-LGBTQ+ legislation signed into law in May.

“Aggravated homosexuality” can involve sex with children or vulnerable people. It can also be categorized as aggravated if someone is forced to have same-sex relations; contracts a lifelong infection, including HIV; or if it involves serial “offenders.”

The man will remain in custody until the High Court hears his case. Uganda has not executed anyone since 2005, but capital punishment is still in effect.
