BEAR BILE FARMING

Our Bear Bile Farming program is dedicated to rescuing bears from the cruel bear bile industry, providing lifelong care for these rescued bears at our esteemed sanctuaries in China and Vietnam, and advocating for an end to this inhumane industry across Asia.

Across Asia, more than 10,000 bears—primarily moon bears, along with sun bears and brown bears—are held captive on bile farms, enduring regular bile extraction procedures for profit.

These bears suffer in deplorable conditions, confined to cramped cages where they cannot even turn around or stand properly. Many endure decades of such confinement, bearing physical scars from the bars of their cages. The toll on their physical and mental health is devastating.


Bile extraction, achieved through various invasive methods, inflicts severe infections on the bears. Most live in a constant state of starvation, dehydration, and disease, their bile contaminated with blood, pus, feces, urine, bacteria, and even cancer cells. Sadly, few receive adequate medical treatment or veterinary care, and some are left to starve to death when they no longer produce bile.

Despite the availability of affordable and effective herbal and synthetic alternatives, the demand for bear bile products persists, primarily from countries like China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Taiwan. These products can also be found in other countries, including Australia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Singapore, the US, and Canada.

Our mission is to combat this cruelty by rescuing bears, providing them with compassionate care, and advocating for a shift away from the use of bear bile. Through education, legislation, and public awareness campaigns, we strive to end the suffering of bears and create a future where all animals are treated with dignity and respect.
