Honoring Courage in the Fight to End the Death Penalty

At Sustainable Action Now, we know that true sustainability isn’t just about protecting ecosystems—it’s about building a more just and humane world. That’s why we are proud to stand with leaders and organizations who are making transformative change in our criminal justice system, especially in the fight to abolish the death penalty.

This year, we are honored to spotlight one of the most inspiring events in that movement: the Death Penalty Focus 2025 Annual Awards Dinner. Now in its 33rd year, this powerful gathering brings together advocates, activists, artists, legal experts, and change-makers from across the country who are united in their mission to end capital punishment.

A Night of Recognition, Reflection, and Resolve

Scheduled for 2025, this awards dinner is not just a fundraiser—it’s a celebration of progress and an urgent call to action. As the nation continues to confront the ethical, legal, and human rights violations inherent in the death penalty, this event reminds us of the incredible individuals who lead the way with courage and clarity.

The evening honors leaders who have made extraordinary contributions to justice through public education, grassroots organizing, legal advocacy, and groundbreaking media work.

The Mario Cuomo Acts of Courage Award – Jason George

Celebrated actor and passionate activist Jason George will be recognized for his relentless dedication to social and criminal justice reform. Known for mentoring young creatives and speaking on issues like gun violence and equity, Jason uses his platform not just for performance—but for purpose. As a member of the Creative Council of Everytown for Gun Safety and a close collaborator with Moms Demand Action and The 97 Percent, Jason’s activism is as powerful as his presence on screen.

The Justice in the Media Award – Marshall Goldberg, Mike Tollin, and Randy Ferrell

This award honors the creators of the gripping documentary series Justice, USA, which provides a rare, intimate look into the real-world challenges faced by indigent defendants in the U.S. criminal justice system. Airing on MAX, the series immerses viewers in the stories of incarceration, mental health struggles, and addiction as they intersect with policing and prosecution in Nashville. This team’s work elevates the conversation on justice and brings crucial issues into the public eye.

The Rose Elizabeth Bird Commitment to Justice Award – Gretchen Sween

Attorney Gretchen Sween is being honored for her unwavering advocacy on behalf of death row inmate Robert Roberson, who has spent over 20 years fighting a conviction based on discredited medical testimony. Thanks to Sween’s tireless work and her appeal to Texas lawmakers, Roberson’s execution has been stayed, and new light is being shed on the flawed science that has contributed to wrongful convictions nationwide.

The Abolition Award – Kristin Houlé Cuellar

As Executive Director of the Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty (TCADP) since 2008, Kristin Houlé Cuellar has long been a force for justice in the Lone Star State. With over two decades of experience in human rights and anti-death penalty organizing, she is one of the movement’s most respected and effective voices. From leading grassroots campaigns to shaping public narratives, Kristin exemplifies what it means to fight with both heart and strategy.

An Evening of Community and Hope

The event will be emceed by the incomparable Paula Poundstone, bringing humor and insight to an evening focused on serious and urgent work. A diverse, interfaith invocation by Rabbi Sharon Brous, Salam Al-Marayati, and Father Chris Ponnet will set a powerful tone for unity. With Professor Laurie Levenson and Betsy Beers presenting awards and a stirring performance by poet Matthew “Cuban” Hernandez, the evening promises to uplift and galvanize everyone in attendance.

Why Sustainable Action Now Supports the End of the Death Penalty

Ending the death penalty is not just a legal or political issue—it’s a human rights imperative. At Sustainable Action Now, we see the death penalty as an extension of systemic inequality, racism, and injustice. It is unsustainable on every level—morally, economically, and socially. It diverts resources from real solutions, disproportionately impacts communities of color, and risks executing innocent people.

We support this movement because justice should be rooted in restoration, not revenge.

Let’s Honor the Past and Build the Future

This year’s awards dinner is a moment to reflect on how far we’ve come—and to recommit ourselves to the road ahead. As we celebrate these remarkable honorees, we also renew our promise to build a society where justice is not weaponized, and every life is treated with dignity.

Don’t miss the opportunity to be part of this essential event. Your presence and support matter more than ever. Join us and help build a future without the death penalty.

Together, we can create a future where compassion and accountability go hand in hand. Sustainable Action Now is proud to stand beside Death Penalty Focus and all those working to end state-sanctioned violence—once and for all.
