At Sustainable Action Now (SAN), we are dedicated to promoting ethical treatment of animals and fostering a compassionate society. Our ongoing campaigns address various issues related to animal welfare, urging individuals and communities to make informed and humane choices. Here’s an overview of our current initiatives:
🐘 Free Billy & Tina – Not Another Zoo!
Billy and Tina, two elephants held in captivity at the Bronx Zoo, continue to live in confined spaces far from their natural habitats. Despite their majestic presence, these intelligent beings endure isolation and limited space, which can lead to physical and psychological distress. SAN advocates for their release to a sanctuary where they can roam freely and live in a more natural environment. Join the movement to #FreeBillyAndTina and help end the exploitation of elephants in captivity.
🐴 Support Ryder’s Law – Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages in NYC
The tragic death of Ryder, a horse who collapsed and died in 2022 while pulling a carriage in New York City, highlighted the inherent dangers and inhumane conditions faced by carriage horses. Ryder’s Law (Intro 573) aims to phase out and ban horse-drawn carriages in NYC, replacing them with electric, horseless carriages. This legislation has garnered support from over 70% of NYC voters and numerous celebrities, including Joaquin Phoenix, Billie Eilish, and Marisa Tomei . We urge New York City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams to advance Ryder’s Law to protect horses from exploitation and ensure their well-being.
👞 Leather Shoes: A Life Lost
Every pair of leather shoes represents the life of an animal. Leather production often involves cruel practices such as confinement, castration without pain relief, and transportation under stressful conditions. Moreover, the tanning process uses toxic chemicals that harm the environment . By choosing cruelty-free alternatives, individuals can make a compassionate choice that spares animals from unnecessary suffering.
🐓 Every Chicken Is Someone
Chickens are sentient beings capable of feeling love, joy, and fear. The only difference between us and them is circumstance. In factory farming, chickens often endure overcrowding, lack of natural light, and painful procedures without anesthesia. Supporting ethical farming practices and considering plant-based alternatives can reduce harm to these gentle creatures and promote a more humane food system.
🚢 The Tragedy of Live Animal Transports
The live transport of animals is a cruel practice that subjects them to inhumane conditions. Animals are often confined in overcrowded trucks without adequate food, water, or rest, leading to stress, injury, and even death. SAN is committed to raising awareness and advocating for the end of live animal transports. By supporting legislation and initiatives aimed at banning this practice, we can protect animals from unnecessary suffering during transport. Animal Legal Defense Fund
