When Animals Asia arrived at the former bile farm in Nanning, China, one bear immediately stood out. Olivia wasn’t just striking for the fiery orange crescent across her chest—she carried the visible scars of a lifetime of cruelty.
Her canines were rotting with infection, her forepaws crudely declawed, her ears cropped, her nose damaged from likely nose-ringing, and her face marked by obsessive head-rubbing. Olivia had been used not for bile extraction, but likely as a breeder bear—yet her suffering was no less profound.
A Body Broken, a Spirit Unbowed
Animals Asia’s veterinary team stepped in immediately, performing extensive dental surgery to remove her infected canines and treat the painful osteomyelitis spreading through her jaw. The transformation was remarkable. With the infection gone, her appetite returned, and soon so did her spark.
From her earliest days at Nanning, Olivia responded to compassion. She devoured fresh fruit and vegetables, eagerly licked banana chunks and strawberry jam from her carers’ hands, and slowly began to explore the world beyond her cage.
Thriving at Sanctuary
Today, Olivia is living the life she was always meant to have. She splashes joyfully in her pool, rolls in piles of straw, and chews happily on leafy branches. In winter, she builds snug straw nests where she snoozes, belly-down, in warmth and peace.
Though she receives pain relief for arthritis, she’s thriving—and she’s an eager participant in Animals Asia’s Cooperative Care program, learning to open her mouth for veterinary checks in exchange for praise and treats. Her carers say she’s in the best condition of her life, finally able to live free from fear and neglect.
A Brave Survivor
Olivia’s story is one of resilience, healing, and hope. Once mutilated and broken by captivity, she is now radiant, remarkable, and deeply loved. While she may be an older bear, her future is filled with peace, comfort, and joy at Animals Asia’s China sanctuary.
