Phi Zeta presents research awards for 2024

Phi Zeta, the international honor society of veterinary medicine, presented the 2024 Research Manuscript Awards, in the categories of basic sciences and clinical sciences, during its annual meeting this past July. For the first time, both awards were won by the same author, Dr. Rebecca M. Legere (Kansas State ’15), nominated by the Eta chapter of Phi Zeta at Texas A&M University. Dr. Legere was awarded $2,000 and engraved plaques in each category.

In the category of basic sciences, Dr. Legere won for her paper “Equine bronchial epithelial cells are susceptible to cell entry with a SARS-CoV-2 pseudovirus but reveal low replication efficiency.” In the category of clinical sciences, Dr. Legere’s winning paper was “Intramuscular but not nebulized administration of a mRNA vaccine against Rhodococcus equi stimulated humoral immune responses in neonatal foals.”

Dr. Legere is an assistant professor of equine medicine at Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences. Her research interests include respiratory and aerosol medicine, neonatology, infectious diseases, immunology, and critical care. Dr. Legere is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in large animal medicine.
