#LastCircusTigers: Turning Their Backs on the Circus—Forever | FOUR PAWS

In a world where the exploitation of wild animals for human entertainment is still far too common, the story of Kenya and Samba, the last circus tigers of Slovakia, offers a hopeful reminder that change is possible. For years, these majestic creatures were forced to perform unnatural tricks under the harsh conditions of the circus. Their every move was dictated by the desire to amuse audiences, with little regard for their physical and emotional well-being.

But today, their journey has taken a dramatic turn. After a ban on using wild animals in performances in Slovakia, Kenya and Samba spent the last 1.5 years confined inside a circus trailer, with little more than a small, cramped space and no chance to engage in natural behaviors. However, thanks to the support of compassionate donors and the tireless work of animal welfare organizations like FOUR PAWS, their lives have changed for the better.

This is their story.

A Mission of Compassion and Hope

When FOUR PAWS received the call about the circus tigers in need, they knew the mission would be complex. The team traveled to Slovakia with one goal: to give Kenya and Samba the future they deserved—one filled with freedom, space, and the opportunity to live as they were meant to.

Sadly, the third member of the circus trio, a white tigress named Princess, could not join them. Princess had been suffering from severe kidney disease and other irreversible conditions. Despite all efforts, the kindest decision was to let her go peacefully, ending her suffering and sparing her from the further hardships of transport.

The loss of Princess was deeply heartbreaking for the team and for Kenya and Samba. However, it was a moment that underscored the importance of the mission—saving the lives of these beautiful tigers and ensuring that no more animals would be subjected to circus life.

The Emotional Rescue and New Beginnings

On the day of the rescue, the team arrived to find Kenya and Samba confined in their circus trailer, their spirits worn down by years of exploitation. They had spent far too long in an environment that stifled their natural instincts and needs. But from the moment they stepped into the caring hands of the FOUR PAWS team, everything began to change.

A thorough preliminary veterinary visit confirmed the physical toll that years of captivity had taken on their bodies. Despite their conditions, Kenya and Samba were still strong, and the team was determined to provide them with the care they needed to heal.

The long journey to the FELIDA Big Cat Sanctuary in the Netherlands marked the beginning of a new chapter for these tigers. The arrival at FELIDA was an emotional moment. Kenya and Samba were no longer just circus performers; they were two tigers about to experience the world they had been denied for so long.

As they were gently released into their indoor enclosure, the relief and joy in their eyes were palpable. For the first time in their lives, they had space to roam, to explore, and to simply be wild. They took their first steps into their new home with a sense of cautious optimism, knowing that this was the beginning of a life without exploitation.

The Sanctuary Life: A Forever Home

At FELIDA Big Cat Sanctuary, Kenya and Samba now have everything they need to live their lives with dignity and comfort. The large outdoor enclosures allow them to roam and experience nature in a way they never could in the circus. They have access to plenty of enrichment activities that mimic natural behaviors, giving them the chance to engage in play, rest, and exploration—activities that are essential to their physical and emotional recovery.

These tigers are no longer a spectacle for human amusement. Instead, they are cherished individuals who will spend the rest of their lives in a place of peace and safety, where they are treated with the respect they deserve.
